Casa Ola Rica is a unique design that merges interior and exterior living with shaded patios that surround the house for unobstructed views of the jungle foliage. This setting, high-up overlooking the Mal Pais beaches, allows for framed views of the ocean and shorelines while also taking advantage of its orientation for both eastern sun and stunning sunset views. As a holistic design, both in construction material and in orientation, the house is naturally cool in all seasons. It features immense sliding teak doors – over 20 feet in width – making the interior and exterior truly blend into one space. At the Wave House the limits between inside and outside are thus blurred. The swimming pool has a unique trapezoidal shape on the south edge of the house and is experienced as an extension of the living area with a infinity edge facing the ocean.
Built on three levels with a curving roof profile – thus the name of the house – the ceiling heights reach over 18 feet inside allowing for hot air to remain in the upper volumes and cool air to remain in the living areas, close to the cool cast concrete floors spaced by flush teak wood strips. Built with steel that is clad in natural teak wood and reddish-brown plaster – the house is furnished with custom furniture built in Costa Rica, lighting fixtures and carpets made by local artists – the house assures a warm interior aesthetic, off-setting the brightness of the Costa Rican sun. This is an important design feature that also helps assure the calm and coolness of modern interior spaces.
Two private bedrooms with bathrooms, all have king size beds and have air conditioning. There is a large mezzanine the full width of the house thirty five feet wide, that sleeps four easily. All beds, and furnishings are new, designed by the owner and made with sustainable woods in the region. There is one interior enclosed full bathroom; and one ‘Bali’ style outside bathroom with tropical plants and fully shielded from any views, off the master bedroom.
The house is located within a pristine 15 acre site of undisturbed jungle, overlooking the surf beaches and cliffs on Pacific side of the Nicoya Peninsula. The property is easy to reach from San Jose by either a ferry or puddle-jumper airplane to our closest local airport in Tambor. Access to the beach and the small town of Santa Teresa, with a wide selection of stores, surf shops and the best restaurants in the peninsula, is just a three minute descend on a paved road from the house. Thus you can enjoy both beach front activities as well as the privacy and seclusion of your own domaine.
The spacious area below the large curved roof hosts two sitting spaces, a dining room table, an open American kitchen and a balcony overlooking the living space. The kitchen is fully equipped with a large fridge, electric stove/oven, and all the appliances you’d need for your stay, such as a coffee maker, blender, etc… There are also a washing machine and dryer in the house and available upon request.
The house comprises two large king-sized bedrooms at the ground level; an immense open balcony level that can sleep up to 4; and a separate studio on the lower level. There are three full bathrooms, one partially exterior and surrounded by tropical plantings, and an exterior shower.
Designed by a French-Puerto Rican artist and completed in 2014, the house is unique in the peninsula, taking cues from sustainable design features such as, natural cross ventilation, immense shading overhangs, large teak sliding doors to keep the heat out, and mineral floors. The house also displays paintings from the artist herself – as well as many local traditional crafts such as a set of locally made terra-cotta dishware.
Casa Ola Rica is thus the perfect balance of contemporary living in one of the most pristine locations on our fragile planet, providing all the comfort for large families and friends, or for those needing a get-away from the bustle of San Jose or from wherever you are traveling from. Welcome to this special place!
Note: Please rent a 4 x 4 car, as 90% of roads in this peninsula are unpaved. All linens are provided and cleaning services, garden/pool maintenance are provided as well.
